Centennial battles through wrestling duals

Seven duals in two days is a lot of wrestling, but the Centennial Broncos ran that gauntlet.

CHS hosted Neligh-Oakdale and Fillmore Central Jan. 14 and wrestled a lot of good matches, Coach Phil Payne said. On Jan. 15, the team was at Minden and went 2-3 in duals.

Freshman Jarrett Dodson was 7-0 on the week and is wrestling well, Payne said.

“All the freshmen won matches,” he said, adding that they are starting to settle in to their weights.

At Minden, Centennial started out against Holdrege and lost 42-39 but won seven of the nine contested matches.

CHS beat Franklin 48-24 but lost to Minden 45-30. The Broncos edged Cambridge 39-30 in a dual in which all three freshmen won their matches, Coach Payne said.

The dual against Cozad ended with Centennial winning on criteria.

“It was crazy. I didn’t think we had enough to win,” the coach said.

The final came down to a double forfeit, which hurt Cozad but helped the Broncos, the coach said. At the end of the dual, Centennial had won seven matches and Cozad six.

Centennial picked up two more duals Jan. 19 at Sandy Creek with South Central Nebraska Unified and Fairbury. The Broncos are scheduled to wrestle at David City Friday, Jan. 15.

Coach Payne said the David City tournament features a lot of conference schools. The conference tournament is set for Saturday, Jan. 30.
