Centennial’s girls’ basketball team had three chances to add to its win total last week. The Broncos succeeded twice, defeating Heartland 48-12 Jan. 3 and Sutton 38-30 Jan. 6. CHS fell short at Raymond Central 43-37 Jan. 7.

Against Heartland, Coach Jake Polk said, the team knew the game would come down to controlling what it could.

“Take care of the ball. Execute the offense,” he said. “We did a good job of that.”

Karley Naber led the team with 12 points.

Sutton is a familiar opponent for CHS. The teams have met six times in the past 25 months, Polk said.

CHS was up to the challenge, playing good defense, he said. Catelynn Bargen led the offense with 13 points.

Against Raymond Central, the emotions and physicality of the week caught up with the Broncos, Polk said. Cora Payne, however, notched her second double double of the week with 12 points and 13 rebounds. She had 11 points and 10 boards against Heartland.

The Broncos (7-5) defeated Shelby-Rising City 48-24 Jan. 10, will travel to Columbus Lakeview Friday, Jan. 13, and host Central City Saturday, Jan. 14, at 2:30 p.m.
