The Centennial girls took the top team spot at the Centennial Invitational April 19, topping Malcolm by 20 points. In the boys’ competition, Milford picked up second behind Columbus Lakeview.

CHS Coach Rob Johansen was pleased to see some new names atop the leaderboard at the meet. Alex Galavez won her first gold in the shot put with a toss of 33-2.

“Things are clicking with Alex in the shot put with back to back PR meets,” Johansen said.

For the first time in three meets, the pole vault was contested, and Centennial’s Samara Ruether earned gold at 9-0.

“We have not had many good weather days to even get in a good practice with the vault, so I was really impressed how well she did,” Johansen said.

Depth in the distance races showed for the Broncos, the coach said. All three runners placed in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. Ella Wambold was third in the 1,600 and second in the 3,200 to lead the way.

Clinton Turnbull led the CHS boys with a second-place finish in the 3,200-meter run, finishing in 11:24.66.

“It’s been tough to get a good time, so looking at placing and who they beat is about as good as we can do. It was a season best for him,” Johansen said.

Seniors Jake Bargen and Carson Fehlhafer each earned a silver medal as well. Bargen cleared 5-10 to finish second in the high jump, and Fehlhafer had a 49-2 throw in the shot put for second place.

CHS hosted a quadrangular April 25 and will next compete in the Southern Nebraska Conference meet Saturday, April 30, at Fairbury.
