Centennial runners got their first taste of competition Sept. 2 when they ran at the Schuyler Invitational.

The boys finished with 61 team points and in fourth place. Clinton Turnbull led the way with a third-place finish in 18:40.47. Camden Winkelman also earned a medal in 12th.

In the girls’ race, Madison Brandenburgh crossed the finish line in 22:53.33 and sixth place, and Josie Turnbull clocked 23:53.61 for 10th place in her first high school race.

Coach Rob Johansen was pleased with the Broncos’ performances.

“Returning state qualifiers Madison Brandenburgh and Clinton Turnbull did what a coach would expect and place in the medals. Others were trying to improve from last year while some it was their first real meet at 5k,” he said.

He was happy to have cooler weather for the race, considering the hot temperatures the Broncos have been practicing in.

“Having three freshmen run their first high school race and having two of them in the top 12 was amazing,” he said. “We are really excited to see how they will improve with more race experience at the 5k distance.”

Centennial is scheduled to run at the Milford Invitational Thursday, Sept. 9. The girls’ race starts at 5 p.m. at Doane University in Crete. The boys’ race will be after that.
