Broncos finish fourth at home invite

In a week full of matches, the Centennial volleyball team saw its ups and downs.

The Broncos opened play Oct. 13 with a triangular against Adams Central and Fillmore Central. Coach Alex Anstine said some players were out sick the day before and “Tuesday looked bleak.”

Against Adams Central, a 25-18, 25-15 loss, the Broncos never clicked, Anstine said. The struggles meant the middle hitters weren’t effective weapons, which put more pressure on the outside hitters.

Centennial came back with a 25-5, 25-15 win over Fillmore Central and kept their errors to a minimum, Anstine said.

On Oct. 15, Centennial played another triangular, this one with David City and David City Aquinas. The same struggles getting into a rhythm popped up against David City, Anstine said. The match was back and forth, but CHS left with a 25-23, 26-24 loss.

Aquinas ran a different defense the Broncos hadn’t seen, and CHS struggled to adjust to it. Once they did, things got better, Anstine said. Centennial edged the Monarchs 25-23, 25-22.

Centennial hosted its invitational Oct. 17 and started off with an 18-25, 30-28, 25-22 loss to Milford. Anstine said her team got frustrated because things didn’t go its way, but offered kudos to the Eagles.

Wood River was the Broncos’ opponent in the third-place match. CHS started out strong but couldn’t keep the momentum, losing 8-25, 25-16, 25-19.

The Broncos (18-10) beat Milford in their first match in the Southern Nebraska Conference tournament Oct. 19 and are slated to play again Oct. 20. Subdistricts start Monday, Oct. 26.
