Bronco wrestlers split duals

The Centennial wrestlers were 2-2 at the Sutton Duals Dec. 21, beating Freeman and Sutton and losing to Wood River and Thayer Central.

Coach Phil Payne said the team wrestled well all day. CHS out-won Wood River 7-2 in matches wrestled and tied Thayer Central 4-4. Payne said the wrestlers did well against state-placer caliber opponents. Sam Payne finished with four wins on the day, as did Nick Keith and Carson Fehlhafer, who only wrestled one match.

Jarrett Dodson was also 4-0 and scored one of the team's better wins against Thayer Central. Coach Payne said. Dodson controlled the match and recorded two takedowns.

"Overall we're moving in the right direction," Coach Payne said.

While CHS outwrestled Wood River, the coach said, the Broncos lost the dual by three points. A couple matches could have gone differently, and that would have given CHS the necessary team points to win.

The duals were the last competition at Centennial for Parker Dishman, whose family is moving.

The Broncos will next wrestle Jan. 7 and 8 at the High Plains Invitational. The Broncos should all be at their competition weights by then, Coach Payne said. The tournament has expanded again and includes teams like Valentine, Lincoln East, Columbus and Gering. Day one is divided into pools, and the top eight wrestlers are placed in a bracket for day two.

"W're looking forward to the competition," Coach Payne said.
