Bronco teams third, fourth at Malcolm meet

Centennial’s track teams finished third and fourth in the team standings at Malcolm.

“Another wind storm....this time much colder with some sleet,” Coach Rob Johansen said. “Even though the weather conditions were poor, it did give us some experience learning to compete and as some say ‘builds character.’ Like bringing plenty of clothes, a stocking hat and gloves.”

Savannah Horne turned in an outstanding performance, Johansen said. The sophomore won the 100-meter dash in 12.84 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 29.03 seconds.

“Savannah bounced back from jumping the gun at Wilber in the 100 to run one of her best times ever,” Johansen said. “I think that first outdoor meet created some jitters for her along with high expectations. She is settling into the season and will have some great times when the temps warm up.”

Her heat of the 200 had to run twice because of timing issues.

She also anchored the 4x100-meter relay team that won its race. Team members were Cambria Saunders, Karley Naber and Samara Ruether.

Molly Prochaska had a good meet as well. She won the 800-meter run in 2:45.86, besting second place by three seconds. She also anchored the 4x400- and 4x800-meter relays, both of which finished second.

Ella Wambold won third place in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.

“She will continue to improve as the weather warms up and she gets more race experience,” Johansen said.

In the boys’ competition, Carson Fehlhafer won the shot put with a season-best throw of 46-6. He finished second in the discus, but it wasn’t easy, Johansen said.

“He struggled like many others in the strong wind with the discus having to get in a ‘safe throw’ on his final attempt to place second,” he said.

Jake Bargen improved his time in the 300-meter hurdles, placing second in 44.26 seconds despite running into the wind on the final stretch.

Bargen also placed second in the high jump.

The Broncos were set to compete at Milford April 12 and then host their home invitational Tuesday, April 19.

CHS won the girls' team title and was fifth in the boys' team race at a weather-shortened meet in Milford. The 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays and the pole vault were not contested because of weather conditions.

Event winners for the Broncos were Savannah Horne in the 100-meter dash (12.82 seconds) and 200-meter dash (26.01), Molly Prochaska in the 800-meter run (2:44.94), Ella Wambold in the 3,200-meter run (14:09.24), the 4x800-meter relay team in 11:41.23, Cambria Saunders in the triple jump (32-9.5) and Carson Fehlhafer in the shot put (51-3.5) and discus (156-5).
