Bronco offense sputters last week

The Centennial offense couldn’t get rolling Aug. 31 at Aurora, as the Broncos came up short 6-1.

CHS had four hits in the game, two singles by Cora Hoffschneider, a double by Halley Heidtbrink and a single by Savannah Horne.

Heidtbrink drove in Horne on her double in the sixth inning.

Aurora got on the board first with two runs in the first inning and added four more in the fifth. Horne took the loss in the circle for the Broncos.

Centennial competed in the Fairbury Invitational Sept. 4 and was 0-3 in its games. Coach Joe Dey said the Broncos did a better job putting the ball in play.

CHS notched eight hits in the 9-4 loss to Fairbury in game one.  Fairbury led 6-0 after the first inning. After that, however, the Broncos outscored the Jeffs 4-3.

“We left a lot of girls on base,” Dey said. “That’s been our Achilles tendon all season.”

Ava Fischer was 2-3 with a double to lead the offense. Halley Heidtbrink drove in two runs.

“Outside of a rough first inning, we played well,” Dey said. “We just need to start off better.”

Centennial lost to Elkhorn North 10-2 in the second game. Dey said EN is a good-hitting team that puts the ball in play.

Fischer, Heidtbrink and Lillian Butzke had Centennial’s three hits, with Butzke and Heidtbrink both hitting doubles.

Dey said outfielder Halle Kinnett robbed an Elkhorn North hitter of a home run with a sensational catch.

Game three pitted the Broncos against Milford, and the Eagles took home an 8-4 win. Milford scored four runs in the first inning and extended its lead with a run in the second and two more in the third.

CHS picked up two runs in the second and one each in the fourth and fifth.

“It was good to see the kids compete,” Dey said.

The Broncos hosted CCV and Wilber-Clatonia in a triangular at Gresham Sept. 7. Centennial lost to CCV 10-9 and beat WCHS 14-4.

The team (2-12) was to host Adams Central and York in a triangular at Beaver Crossing Sept. 9.
