The Centennial girls’ track team finished just 6.5 points from first place at the Malcolm Invitational April 7.

Coach Rob Johansen said a few athletes turned in personal-best marks despite the weather.

“I thought the distance runners ran well for the windy conditions,” he said. “Clinton Turmbull and Madison Brandenburgh ran personal best times and competed hard in both the 1,600 and 3,200.”

Centennial’s top finishers in the girls’ competition were Daylee Dey with the win in the 1,600-meter run and second place in the 800-meter run; the 4x100-meter relay team of Savannah Horne, Kate Hirschfeld, Lexus Prochaska and Jillian Bailey which won in 54.67 seconds; the 4x400-meter relay team of Horne, Molly Prochaska, Hirschfeld and Dey that won in 4:32.14; Brandenburgh, second in the 3,200-meter run; Hirschfeld, second in the triple jump; and Kailey Ziegler, second in the discus.

In the boys’ competition, the Broncos were third behind Wilber-Clatonia and Malcolm.

Two Broncos battled for top honors in the pole vault, as Cooper Gierhan and Sam Tomes both reached 12-0. Gierhan cleared 12-3 in the tiebreaker to win.

“As a coach on  these cold weather days, you just hope that no one pulls a muscle or gets injured. We seemed to get through it OK,” Johansen said.

Additional top finishers for CHS included Will Saunders, second in the 110-meter hurdles; and Jake Bargen, second in the 300-meter hurdles.

The Broncos were scheduled to compete at Milford April 13 and then host an invitational Tuesday, April 20, with events starting at 2 p.m.
