Bronco girls come from behind to win SNC championship

The Centennial girls needed all their places at the Southern Nebraska Conference track meet to win the meet May 3.

The Broncos were in fourth place for most of the day Coach Rob Johansen said. After all three runners placed in the 1,600-meter run, CHS pulled into third place.

“That race was huge in starting the comeback,” Johansen said.

Grace Schernikau was seeded 10th and finished second in 6:15.4. Ella Wambold was fifth and Madison Brandenburgh was sixth.

Centennial scored 11 team points in the race and trailed Superior by 12 points with two events left – the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays.

In the 4x100, Johansen said, Horne got the baton in sixth place and finished third, pulling Centennial within eight.

The 4x400 team needed to win and have the other two schools finish no better than fifth, Johansen said.

Horne joined Cora Payne, Gracen Fehlhafer and Molly Prochaska, running the anchor leg, and the quartet ran a season-best time of 4:24.63 to win.

“A lot of things had to go right for all of the pieces to fall into place,” Johansen said. “It was a great team win for the girls. All those fifth and sixth places can help add up to team wins.”

The 4x800-meter relay team of Payne, Grace Schernikau, Lillian Butzke and Prochaska also won in 10:58.77.

Horne picked up gold in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 12.9 seconds, and Prochaska won the 800-meter run in 2:33.2.

The Broncos edged Superior and Fairbury by two points for the team title.

In the boys’ competition, Carson Fehlhafer led the Broncos with a season-best throw of 163-3 to place second in the discus. He was also third in the shot put with a 51-1.25 throw.

“Really pleased with those throws going into the end of the year,” Johansen said.

Clinton Turnbull ran a personal best 10:58.2 to finish third in the 3,200-meter run. Jake Bargen placed third in the 300-meter hurdles in 43.43 seconds.

The Broncos will be in the District C1 meet Thursday, May 12, at Malcolm. Teams in the field are Conestoga, Elmwood-Murdock, Freeman, Johnson County Central, Lincoln Lutheran, Lourdes Central Catholic, Palmyra and Parkview Christian. Events start at 10 a.m.
