Bomb squad responds as kids find grenade

Two kids walking along the riverbank found a live grenade Sept. 18 near 294th and Bluff roads on the northeast side of Seward.

At approximately 2:30 p.m., Seward County deputies responded to a report of a possible explosive device in the area.

The two juveniles were walking down the riverbank and observed a hand grenade near the edge of the river.

Deputies requested assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol Bomb Squad. The responding Trooper determined it was a live fragmentation grenade.

A controlled detonation was conducted by a member of the NSP Bomb Squad, destroying the grenade on scene.

The Seward County Sheriff’s Office reminds anyone who comes in contact with unexploded ordnance to contact the nearest police agency and leave the item untouched.
