Bluejays get rematch in opening round

The Seward girls’ basketball team earned the No. 3 seed in the Class B field at the state basketball tournament. The Jays (20-4) will play Northwest (18-5) Thursday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m. at the Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln.

The Jays won their first meeting 53-52 Dec. 8.

Seniors Kayla Luebbe and Camryn Opfer lead the Bluejays. Luebbe is averaging 13.88 points and 5.67 rebounds per game. Opfer scores 11.33 points per game and averages 7.58 rebounds per contest.

The Jays are shooting 27.3 percent from three-point range on the season. Bailee Baack leads the team with 27 threes.

Northwest is led by a pair of juniors – Whitney Brown, who has scored 377 points this season and makes 31 percent of her three-point attempts, and Lauren Hauser, who has 175 rebounds on the season.

Seward qualified for state last season, as well, and lost to Elkhorn South in the first round.

Sidney (22-3) got the top seed in Class B and will play Elkhorn South (12-13). The No. 2 seed Waverly (22-2) will play Elkhorn (19-5), and Crete (19-5) and Skutt (18-6) are the Nos. 4 and 5 seeds.

The semifinals in Class B will be Friday, March 1, at 2 and 3:45 p.m. at Pinnacle Bank Arena. The Class B championship will be Saturday, March 2, at 1 p.m. at PBA.
