Bluejays finish out of medals at state

Seward’s two wrestlers at the state tournament Feb. 16-18 each won at least a match, but both finished outside the medal rounds.

Seniors Nolan Hill (170 pounds) and Dustin Hurley (220 pounds) compete in the Class B tournament in Omaha.

In his first trip to state, Hurley was 2-2 and advanced to the consolation semifinals.

“It was good to see him have a good tournament,” Coach Bob Core said. “He had a tough match Friday. He had a shot and got caught.”

He was happy to see Hurley win matches, especially since Hurley only weighs about 190 pounds.

Hill, wrestling in his third state tournament, didn’t have as much success.

“It just wasn’t his tournament,” Core said.

He did go 1-2, winning his first consolation match by pin.

Core said the seniors will be missed in the wrestling room next season and is looking for underclassmen to step into the leadership roles they have vacated.

He is looking forward to seeing how the younger wrestlers develop during the offseason as they spend time on the mats and in the weight room.

“The work ethic is there,” Core said.
