The Seward golf team completed a successful week, winning a triangular March 29 and a dual April 1.

The Jays defeated Bishop Neumann and David City Monday. Seward shot a 168, Neumann a 176 and David City a 189. Ty Wehrs and Ander Axthelm of Seward tied for the low score with a 40. Jordan Biggs shot a 43, Dane Conner a 45 and Bryce Piskorski a 54.

“Considering the 35-40 mile-an-hour winds, I was pleased,” Coach Jim Placke said. “We’ve gotten off to a nice start.”

He said playing the first few events at home has helped the inexperienced golfers get more comfortable in competition.

“Neumann and David City have nice players at one and two,” Placke said. “We had to play well to win.”

In the dual against Crete April 1, Seward shot another 168, with Crete shooting 215. Wehrs led the team with a 39, Conner a 41, Axthelm 43, Biggs 45 and Piskorski 53.

As the season progresses, Placke said the competition for the No. 5 spot will intensify.

“We will have a playoff on a weekly basis,” he said, adding that the underclassmen are starting to gain some experience. “That makes it fun from a coaching standpoint.”

Seward’s next competition is Thursday, April 8, in the Norris Invitational at Pioneers Golf Course in Lincoln.

Placke said the course may play a little similar to Seward’s, which will add to the comfort level of the younger golfers.

“It’s exciting to get out and experience other courses,” he said.
