Alvin Leo Suhr was born March 23, 1926, near Shelby to Edward and Maria (Fritz) Suhr. He attended schools in Butler and Seward counties and graduated from Seward High School in May 1944. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from June 1944 to June 1946 as a seaman on the USS Rockwell in the Pacific Theater and spent seven months in China. On Oct. 3, 1948, Alvin was united in marriage to Betty Schaefer at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Staplehurst. He spent over 50 years in the insurance industry in Seward and Lincoln. He was a member of the Seward VFW Post 4755, American Legion Post 33, St. John Lutheran Church and was a past member of the Seward City Council.Alvin passed away in Seward at the age of 93 years, 7 months and 7 days.

He is survived by his daughters, Linda (Larry) Zillig of Lincoln and Patricia (Larry) Stanton of Fort Calhoun; grandchildren, Rachel (Drew) Kelley, Larry J. (Jennifer) Stanton, Eric (Stephanie) Zillig and Kyle (Elizabeth) Zillig; great-grandchildren, Morgan and Mason Kelley, Logan, Tyler and Jameson Stanton and William, Emma, Annalise and Madison Zillig; sister-in-law, Phyllis Suhr; brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Sandra Suhr; brother-in-law, Earl Cooksey; nieces and nephews.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Marie Suhr; wife, Betty Suhr; sisters, Irene (Carl) Matzner and Elverna (Floyd) Baack; brothers, Wilbur (Dorothy) Suhr, Lloyd Suhr, Dale (Betty Lou) Suhr and Wayne Suhr; and sister-in-law, Karen Cooksey.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, 2019, at Volzke Funeral Home in Seward, with the family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. A service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward, with the Rev. David Rempfer officiating. Casketbearers are Rachel Kelley, Larry J. Stanton, Eric Zillig, Kyle Zillig, Leon Matzner and Marlin Suhr. Interment with full military honors will be in the Seward Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Suhr family for future designation.
