Seward football wins big at home

Gabe Knisley took the opening kickoff back for a touchdown, and the Seward football team didn’t look back Sept. 7, beating Lexington 54-21 to improve to 3-0 on the season.

“This was a great win for us,” Coach Jamie Opfer said. “Every game is the biggest game of the year. I was happy with our performance for the most part.”

The Jays outgained the Minutemen 321-99 on the ground and 266-164 through the air in the win. Davon Brees broke the 100-yard mark for the first time this season, gaining 183 yards on 17 carries for SHS.

Joseph Krause completed 15 of 24 pass attempts for 267 yards. Brett Meyer was his favorite target, catching five passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns.

Opfer said the offensive line did a good job opening holes for the running backs and protecting the quarterback. However, he said, they can do better on plays that pull one direction or the other.

He was pleased to see the ground game get rolling, something that hadn’t happened in the previous two games.

On defense, the Jays intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble to help slow the Lexington attack. Adam Garton led the unit with six solo tackles and one assist.

The Jays will play a new opponent Friday, Sept. 14, when they visit Bennington. The Badgers run a spread formation like Seward, Opfer said. He said they have a nice quarterback and athletic receivers who will challenge Seward’s defense.
