Holtorf leads Seward seniors to win

A walk-off single helped the Seward American Legion seniors double their win total last week.

After building a 6-0 lead in three innings against Springfield June 16, Seward saw the visitors come back to tie the score at 8-8 going into the bottom of the seventh inning.

Jacob Groff led off with a double for Seward in the bottom of the seventh. After a pop fly out, Tayte Rolenc singled to center and took second on the throw to home. Courtesy runner Zac Tonniges was thrown out at the plate for the second out of the inning.

With a full count and two outs, Caleb Mohnike singled to center to drive in Rolenc and give Seward the win.

Derek Holtorf was 4-4 in the game with a home run and two doubles. Rolenc was 3-3 and scored four runs, and Groff was 2-3 with two RBIs.

Seward’s second win was June 14 against Schuyler, a 9-1 victory. Brett Meyer pitched all five innings, striking out seven. Rolenc was 2-3 and scored twice.

The first two games of the week were losses for Seward. The team hosted Bennington June 12 and took a 1-1 tie into the seventh inning. Bennington scored four in the inning to win 5-1.

Seward lost to Waverly 6-5 June 13 despite leading 5-1 after the fourth inning. Waverly scored four to tie the score in the fifth and took the lead in the sixth. Rolenc was 2-4 for Seward.

Coach Casey Berg was pleased with the week overall.

“I thought it was a really good week for us,” he said.

Errors hurt the team in its losses, he said. For example, against Bennington, the Seward defense dropped a pop fly with the bases loaded, allowing Bennington to take the lead.

Seward (4-9) was scheduled to travel to Elkhorn June 19 and will host a double header against Albion Thursday, June 21, starting at 6 p.m.

Juniors see run abundance

The Seward Legion Juniors saw lots of runs in their four games last week. Seward was 1-3 in those games, beating Schuyler 14-2 June 14 but losing to Bennington 7-1 June 12, to Waverly 14-3 June 13 and to Springfield 15-7 June 16.

Against Schuyler, Seward had eight hits, led by two-hit games from Theo Hughes and Hunter Novacek. Hughes and Zac Tonniges drove in two runs each, as well.

Hughes had a good week at the plate, Coach Casey Berg said, going 2-3 against Bennington and 1-2 with a double and two RBIs against Springfield.

Seward was scheduled to travel to Elkhorn June 19 and compete in a tournament in Crete starting Friday, June 22. The tournament schedule had not been announced at press time.
