Bronco softball splits triangular

With Sept. 4’s triangular rescheduled because of rain, the Centennial softball team hosted Adams Central and York in Beaver Crossing Sept. 6, splitting the two games.

The Broncos held off Adams Central 7-6 but lost to York 6-4.

Coach Jake Polk said defense helped the Broncos beat Adams Central.

“That was the reason we won,” he said. “We played really clean.”

In addition, Shelby Ziegler hit a bases-clearing double in the third inning to push the lead to 7-4. Aly Timmerman turned an outstanding double play, as well.

“This was a senior-led game,” Polk said, listing Timmerman, Ziegler and Lilly Cast as primary contributors.

Game two against York was a different story.

“We knew we’d have our hands full with York,” Polk said. “They lost a big senior class, but there’s still a lot of experience.”

The Dukes led 2-0 after the top of the second, but CHS scored three in the bottom of the inning. York answered with three of its own in the top of the third.

“We were never able to break through,” Polk said.

The Broncos had a chance to tie in the fifth inning. Ziegler led off with a double and took third on a single by Cast, who then stole second.

“The next three batters couldn’t do anything,” Polk said. “We had too many strikeouts. We have to put the ball in play.”

Chaylee Tonniges was 2-3 with a triple to lead CHS.

Polk also praised catcher Maddie Avery, who was filling in for Aurora Junge who was out sick.

“She stepped up and did a nice job for us,” Polk said.

The Broncos had a full week of games scheduled. The triangular from Sept. 4 was moved to Sept. 10. Centennial was to host Milford Sept. 11 at Beaver Crossing and then travel to Arlington for a tournament Saturday, Sept. 15, with its first game at 9 a.m.
