The Seward softball team placed third in the Crete Invitational Sept. 22, beating Crete 6-5, losing to Bishop Neumann 3-2 and defeating Nebraska City 14-9.

The game against Crete featured two evenly matched teams, Coach Rich Eber said. Seward trailed 5-1 going into the bottom of the fourth, when Becca Rhoades hit a pinch-hit home run over the fence to tie the game. In the bottom of the sixth, Rhoades' sacrifice fly gave the Jays a walk-off win.

Game two against Neumann was another battle, Eber said.

"They were able to push one more across," he said.

In the third-place game, the Jays used two home runs by Grace Hamling and another by Lindsay Flesner to outscore Nebraska City.

The week started with a 13-3 win over Lakeview Sept. 17. Rhoades hit the first home run of her career, and Clare Karel also hit a home run for SHS.

On Sept. 24, Seward hosted Omaha Burke, the first time SHS has played Burke, and lost 5-3. Schuyler came to Plum Creek Park Sept. 25, and Seward outscored the Warriors 10-0.

Up next for the Jays is the Central Conference tournament Friday, Sept. 28, at Grand Island Northwest. The regular season ends Oct. 1 against Grand Island Central Catholic, with districts starting Thursday, Oct. 4.
