A game of scoring runs ended with the Seward girls outscoring Beatrice 58-47 Jan. 5 in a battle of two of Class B’s top teams.

The Jays, ranked No. 5, trailed the Lady Orange, listed as a contender, by eight after the first quarter. But SHS outscored BHS 22-7 in the second to lead 31-24 at halftime. The score was tied in the fourth quarter before SHS pulled away.

“There were unbelievable swings of momentum,” Coach Tom Tvrdy said. “This was a good win for us.”

He said the Bluejay defense needs to do a better job limiting looks at the basket.

“We’re giving up too many points,” he said.

Camryn Opfer notched a double double (21 points, 11 rebounds) to lead the Jays. Kate Mullally scored nine points and delivered six assists, and Kelsie Zadina scored nine.

The Jays (7-3) were to travel to Schuyler Friday, Jan. 12, and to Waverly Saturday, Jan. 13. Waverly is ranked No. 3 in Class B.
