Library celebrates in the street

Seward Memorial Library had food, fun, music and games this past weekend, as well as a concert by The Avid Readers band Sept. 16 to celebrate its 15th anniversary in its current building. See more photos from the event on the front of this week's SCI. The library's month-long-plus celebration will continue this Sunday, Sept. 23, with an informal program featuring local author and Pulitzer Prize winner Ted Kooser, former U.S. Poet Laureate and consultant in poetry to the Library of Congress.

Details: “A Chat About Writing and the Writing Life” at 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 23. Ted Kooser teaches poetry writing at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He will have an informal conversation with library patrons over coffee and cookies.

After that: Dr. Brent Royuk will share the background of his historic home located at 142 Seward Street. His presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27, at the library.

Locals headed to state twin convention

Yep, that's a thing. The Nebraska State Twin Association holds an annual Twin Convention in October, and twins Jill Payne of Utica and Janae Spiker of Lincoln are planning to attend again this year. They'd like more twins from the area to go, too. Read their story HERE, and watch for another twin tale in next week's SCI.

Coming up:

Buddy Check: A Buddy Check for military veterans will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on the 22nd of each month at Valentino’s in Seward, located at 1519 West Highway 34. Buddy Check is an effort by local volunteers to help prevent suicide by giving veterans a chance to talk to other veterans over pizza. Events will be held at the same time and location each month and are open to veterans of all branches, times of service and ages. For more information, contact Seward County Veterans Service Officer Jeff Baker at (402) 643-4105.

Jan Brett: Concordia University's Marxhausen Gallery of Art will host the exhibit, “The World of Jan Brett,” as part of the Plum Creek Literacy Festival and is currently available for viewing at the Marxhausen Gallery of Art on Concordia's campus through Oct. 18.

Each year, the Plum Creek Children's Literacy Festival sponsors a traveling exhibit of children's book illustrations in conjunction with the festival. This year, it showcases the original artwork of Jan Brett, one of the most renowned author illustrators of children's books in the country. The exhibit includes over 70 original paintings from her best-selling books that take the viewer on a world tour of the many diverse cultures and locations from which Brett draws her inspiration.

Some of Brett's publications include “The Mitten,” “Hedgie's Surprise,” “The Gingerbread Baby,” “Trouble with Trolls” and her latest book “The Snowy Nap.” This will be the second time she has kicked off one of her national book tours with an appearance at Concordia. Brett will also be holding an artist talk and book signing on at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at Weller Hall on Concordia's campus.
