Plaza begins to take shape

Work began yesterday on the new plaza on the northwest corner of the courthouse square in Seward. The plaza will feature a statue of William H. Seward and a gathering space. Read more about the project HERE.

One arrested, 24 defendants served in livestock case

Two Seward County residents are among the 24 defendants named in a Fillmore County court case in which 400 livestock were found on an Exeter farm April 3—half of them dead.

One man, Aaron E. Ogren, 30, of Exeter was arrested on 29 felony charges, while the others have been served notice to appear at a hearing scheduled for April 19.

The defendants include Aaron E. Ogren and Justin C. Ogren of Exeter, Ogren Brothers Trucking company, Eva Turbiville, Sara Ogren, Kenneth Eller and Becky Luzum, all of Exeter, Beau Addison of Collbran, Colorado, Jason Miller of Mack, Colorado, Michael Pavel and Ronald Pavel, both of Lesterville, South Dakota, Paula Bischoff of Emit, Idaho, Matt Perham of Laura, Illinois, Riley Olson of Stockton, Missouri, Preston Hawley of Utica, Gene Hawley of Arcadia, Bruce and Jake Guthard, both of Litchfield, Benjamin Wolken of Madison, Kenneth Burritt of Osceola, Jeary Morgan of Utica and Randy Neujahr of Osceola.

A judge also called for service by publication on John and Jane Doe, husband and wife, and “all persons having or claiming any interest in and to” the livestock case.

Genealogy meeting: The Seward County Genealogical Soceity will hold its monthly meeting at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 18, in its library at the Seward Civic Center. The library is open from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursdays for those wishing to search its resources for family history.

Happy anniversary: The Seward County Chamber and Development Partnership will celebrate business anniversaries at its annual membership luncheon at 11:30 a.m. at the Seward Memorial Library. Cost is $10 per person, pre-registered.

Tomorrow:

Free movie: The Seward Youth and Community Club will sponsor a free movie at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 19, at Rivoli Theatre in Seward. Students in kindergarten through eighth grades get in free if they bring two non-perishable items for the Seward Food Pantry. Preschool children and younger get in free. High school students and adults are asked to bring cash donations for the food pantry.
