Digging up history: Trio uncovers items lost in outhouses

Tim Clements is privy to Milford’s history.

He can tell you what the kids played with, what kinds of medicine people used and a bit about the old bottling works in town, and he learned it all from digging up the ground under an old outhouse.

Clements, a Lincoln resident, operates Urban Privy Reclamation as a hobby. He and two of his friends, Jim Ohme and Dave Kupier, both of Omaha, recently completed a privy dig at the future site of Milford’s new municipal building at the corner of First and Walnut streets in Milford.

A privy refers to the hole used as an outdoor toilet before indoor plumbing came about.

Former teammates face off

There was a definite buzz in the air around Malcolm last week, and it had nothing to do with the anticipation of the long-awaited Scott Frost era of Nebraska football. While this buzz did have to do with high level college athletics, it was about a sport that has brought a great deal of pride to the village of just over 400 people nestled between Lincoln and Seward.

After playing together on high school and club volleyball courts for three years, Malcolm High School alums Hayley Densberger and Jaela Zimmerman found themselves across the court from each other the evening of Sept. 6 as Densberger’s Nebraska Cornhuskers faced Zimmerman’s Creighton Bluejays in a matchup of top 15 ranked teams.

NE National Guard en route to Raleigh

Gov. Pete Ricketts announced Thursday afternoon that two Nebraska Army National Guard helicopters and 13 soldiers assigned to a Lincoln-based Nebraska Army National Guard aviation unit are mobilizing in support of Hurricane Florence relief operations.

The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency received a request for helicopters and crews for air search and rescue in Raleigh, North Carolina. NEMA arranged the sharing of resources through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, which is the nation's state-to-state mutual aid system.

“With Hurricane Florence expected to bring significant damage to our fellow citizens in North Carolina, we are mobilizing members of our Nebraska National Guard to provide support to the relief operations,” Ricketts said. “The Nebraska Army National Guard soldiers we are deploying are trained and ready to carry out this mission, and we are confident that they will provide significant support for what is expected to be a major relief operation.”

Two UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters and 13 soldiers from the Lincoln-based Company G, 2-104th General Support Aviation Battalion, deployed to Tennessee Thursday, where they will be pre-staged until the hurricane makes landfall. Once weather permits, they will move into North Carolina to begin assisting in any needed relief operations.

“Our guidance from our commander-in-chief, Gov. Pete Ricketts, is the Nebraska National Guard will pitch in and help our neighbors whenever possible. We stand ready to do so once again if any of the states impacted by Hurricane Florence requests our assistance,” said Maj. Gen. Daryl Bohac, Nebraska adjutant general.
