Gladys (Stava) Read, daughter of Katie (Hurt) Stava and Albert Stava, was born in Bee on Jan. 27, 1931, and passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on her 87th birthday. Gladys attended Teachers College High School and Lincoln School of Commerce in Lincoln. Gladys married Clifford “Cliff” Read in Lincoln on Feb. 18, 1950. They moved to Perry, Iowa, in 1958. They had three children, Keith, David and Karen.

Gladys was a member of the Perry First Presbyterian Church and served as a deacon. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching, games and holiday family gatherings. She was a proud resident and advocate for the town of Perry, Iowa, for more than 60 years and made the Perry Lutheran Home her residence for the last 18 months. Gladys greatly loved her family and was a friend to everyone she met.

Gladys is survived by her son, Keith Read, and his wife, Sue, of Olathe, Kansas, and their daughters, Danyel, of Chicago, Illinois, and Mikelle, also of Olathe; Teresa (Wempe, Read) Malchesky and her husband, Victor, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; nieces who were raised and thought of as daughters, Jeri (Lynn) Naber and Janel (the late Marshall) Menz; great-nephew, Chad Menz and his daughter, Alannah; great-nieces, Lynnelle Nissen and her children, Donovan, Danielle, Dylan and Dalaina, and Laura (Wade) Schluckebier and their children, Ryon Richardson and Annika.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Albert and Ermin; one sister, Nora Divis; her husband, Cliff; and two children, David and Karen.

A funeral service was held Jan. 31, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church in Perry, Iowa, with the Rev. Lynne Hanna officiating. Interment was in Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be made to the church. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.hastingsfh.com.
