George W. Wignall

Aug. 8, 1940 – Dec. 2, 2018

Profoundly loyal and with a big, gentle heart, George Wilfred Wignall left this world on Sunday evening, Dec. 2, 2018, the way he most enjoyed life: surrounded by the family he loved. Formerly of Glenwood, Iowa, and more recently living in Seward, George graduated from Holmesville High School in 1957 and then attended the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

In 1962, he went to work for the Natural Gas Pipeline of America and devoted his entire career to the company until he retired in 1994. George was married for 61 years to the love of his life, Bonnie Jean. He had a quiet yet tireless energy and lived his life with purpose, as was evident in his many hobbies and numerous volunteer activities, including work for the Mills County Historical Museum and the Mills County Storehouse. He served on the board of the Storehouse and in 2002 was named Neighbor of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce.

Described as disciplined and predictable, he had a lifelong passion for garage sales—buying and selling—and a great sense of humor. Anyone who dared play blackjack with him knew him as a fierce competitor.

George will be sorely missed by his wife, Bonnie Jean (Winkle); his sister, Sonja Wrightsman of Muskogee, Oklahoma; his four sons, Steven and his wife Cathy of Seward, Jeffrey of Creston, Iowa, Bradley and his wife Sally of Papillion and Douglas and his wife Jane of Glenwood, Iowa; as well as by his 14 grandchildren, his great-grandchild and countless friends whom he treasured.

A funeral service was held Dec. 7, 2018, at Volzke Funeral Home in Seward, with Jon Palmquist officiating. Casketbearers were Alden Wignall, Dalton Wignall, Timothy Wignall, Zachariah Wignall, Isaac Wignall, Angelo Wignall, Caleb Wignall and Tyler Welch. Interment was in the Beatrice Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wignall family for future designation. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.volzkefuneralhome.com.
