Evangeline M. “Susie” Alley

Jan. 16, 1922 – Jan. 7, 2018

Evangeline May “Susie” Alley was born Jan. 16, 1922, to John and Winifred (Dobson) Craig in Beaver Crossing and passed away Jan. 7, 2018, in Yankton, South Dakota. The family moved to Seward in the early 1930s, where Evangeline attended school, graduating in 1940.

On May 11, 1941, she was united in marriage to Richard Alley in Benton, Arkansas, and to this union three children were born, Pat, Sandra and Larry. Evangeline loved to crochet and made an afghan for every grandchild, great-grandchild and great-great-grandchild. She enjoyed playing the dice game Bones. In her younger years she enjoyed bowling, playing on several leagues, and she also loved ice skating. After Richard passed away, she and her two daughters would take at least one trip a year, and it had to be more than 500 miles away and include at least one train ride. She loved her family and spending time with friends. Evangeline also had many spiritual brothers and sisters through her baptism into the Jehovah’s Witness congregation.

Evangeline was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard in November 1993; son, Larry in January 2017; four brothers, Gordon, Delbert, Richard and David Craig; grandson, Loren Levi Alley; and infant great-great-grandson, Gabriel Leader.

She is survived by her two daughters, Pat and husband, Leon Wakeley of Crofton, Sandra and husband, William Hladky of Schuyler; daughter-in-law, Suzie Alley of Seward; sisters-in-law, Doris June Craig and Verneal Burkey; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; five step-great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018, at Zabka Funeral Home in Seward, with Brother Don Peek officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Seward Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alley family for future designation. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.zabkafuneralhome.com.
