Seward VFW Post 4755 and the American Legion Post 33 will hold a Memorial Day program at 10 a.m. on May 28 at the north cemetery, located on Highway 15 and Waverly Road. Coffee and rolls will be served after the ceremony at the VFW Club.

Milford

At 10 a.m. on May 28, the Milford Legion Post 171 will hold a ceremony at Blue Mound Cemetery, south of Southeast Community College. The speaker will be Jeff Baker, the Seward County veterans service officer, and the Milford High School band will provide music. There will be a brunch afterward at the Milford Senior Center.

Utica

The Utica Legion Post 49 will start with a service May 28 at Waco Cemetery at 10 a.m. At 2 p.m., the Legion will hold its second service at the Utica Cemetery, where Peyton Johansen will deliver the Gettysburg Address. The Legion will also honor Verna Richert and Dennis Kohtz as 50 year continuous members. Following the services, the Legion will serve a spaghetti supper at the Utica Auditorium from 4 to 7 p.m. with proceeds supporting Legion programs.

Also in Utica, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church will hold a Memorial Day Mass at 9:30 a.m. at the Catholic Cemetery. The mass will be held inside the church if it rains. Following the ceremony, there will be refreshments in the cemetery, or in the Parish Hall if it rains. Guests are asked to bring their own chair, stool or blanket and to pick up flowers two weeks after Memorial Day, but those in containers on the cement bases can be left.

Beaver Crossing/Goehner

On Memorial Day, Beaver Crossing Legion Post 178 will hold two ceremonies, one in Goehner at Mound Prairie Cemetery at 10 a.m., where the Legion will dedicate a new fence following the ceremony. The second service will be in at 11:30 in the Beaver Crossing Cemetery. Jim Schulz will be the guest speaker at both locations.

Malcolm/Pleasant Dale

The Pleasant Dale Legion Post 354 will host Memorial Day services at the Malcolm Cemetery at 9 a.m. with the Malcolm High School band performing and at Pleasant Dale at 11 a.m. with the Milford High band performing. The Legion will host a luncheon in Pleasant Dale following the 11 a.m. service.

Garland

The Garland Legion Post 369 will hold its Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. on May 28 outside the Legion Hall on Main Street. The guest speaker is Command Sgt. Maj. Marty Baker, the senior non-commissioned officer for the Nebraska Army National Guard. A community pot-luck dinner will take place at 11:30 a.m. in the Legion Hall and the Germantown Bank building will be available for tours in the afternoon.

Cordova

In Cordova, the Legion Post 359 will have services at Zastrow Cemetery at 2 p.m. on May 28. The speaker will be Tim Wilbeck, a Vietnam veteran. There will be refreshments following the service at the Cordova Community Building.

Gresham

Gresham’s Memorial Day observtions coincide with the community’s Fireman’s Picnic, which begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 26, with water fights taking place at 1:30 p.m. and an alumni banquet at 6 p.m. On Sunday, May 27, the picnic begins at 9 a.m. Also on May 27, at 10 a.m. the community will dedicate the new Memory Park, which features a stainless steel sculptural gazebo. There will be engraved bricks paving the pathway to the gazebo as well as its floors. The structure is located on the former American Legion site, east of York State Bank.

On Memorial Day, the Davidson-Neujahr Post 13 and the Sons of the American Legion will hold a service at 9 a.m. at Cedar Lawn Cemetery. A community breakfast will follow at the Gresham Community Center.

Dorchester

The Dorchester Legion Post 264 will host its Memorial Day services May 28 at the Dorchester Cemetery at 10 a.m. and at Pleasant Hill Cemetery at 11 a.m. on May 28. There will be lunch at the Legion hall following the ceremony at Pleasant Hill.
