Man killed while fixing semi on interstate

Posted

At approximately 4 p.m. Nov. 7, the Seward County

Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a semi versus pedestrian accident on I-80.

The accident was determined to have occurred at I-80 mile marker 368 westbound, approximately 11 miles west of the Seward exit.

The preliminary investigation shows that a semi-truck had pulled over on

the shoulder of the interstate because of a mechanical issue.

The driver of the semi, Jon Christensen, 71, of Lakeland, Florida, requested roadside assistance for the mechanical issue. Two roadside assistance workers from TA Petro of York arrived and fixed the mechanical problem.

After fixing the issue, Christensen began to drive the truck. At this time, Jeremy Covert, 41, of York, went back under the semi.

Christensen did not know Covert went back under the semi. As Christensen began driving, Covert was struck and pronounced deceased

at the scene.

The accident was investigated by the Seward County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol.
