The Seward County Commissioners approved the E-911 2018-19 fiscal year budget with 2-percent salary increases for employees.

The county has an interlocal agreement with the cities of Milford and Seward, both of which approved the E-911 budget with 2.5-percent pay increases.

During earlier budget discussions, the commissioners directed department heads to give up to 2-percent raises for employees who merit them.

The E-911 budget total is around $700,000.

Pay increases for 911 employees was a topic of discussion last year as well. E-911 Director Barb Liska said at that time she had a 10-year employee who was being paid the same as a one-year employee.

The commissioners hired Marrow and Associates to conduct a salary study that would address longevity pay, but the study will not be complete in time for budget preparation.

Commissioner Whitney Fleischman said June 26 that, while larger raises may be deserved, it’s a matter of principle.

“It’s because we need to be consistent with every department,” Fleischman said.

Commissioner Roger Glawatz said even though Milford and Seward might not agree with the 2-percent raises, the county is ultimately responsible for the 911 center’s pay.

“We have to stick with what we’re going to do,” Glawatz said.
