Chantel Collier and Ana Taylor dreamed about opening a health care center during their time together in nursing school.
The duo, who attended Clarkson College, did just that on May 7 when they opened Complete Rural Medicine Health Clinic in Friend.
“We had the goal of opening a practice, and the time presented itself, so we jumped right in,” Taylor said.
Complete Rural Medicine offers a variety of services including acute care such as ear and urinary tract infections, family practice (from birth to 100+ years) and chronic disease management.
The clinic also works closely with the Friend EMT responders and refers patients to the Friend Community Healthcare System if the situation calls for it, like for a chest pain or a more serious matter.
The two had previously been employed at FCHS.
The vision for Complete Rural Medicine has changed since the two first thought of the idea. Both Taylor and Collier said working in rural healthcare means one thing and one thing only: community.
“You have to be an expert on pretty much everything,” Taylor said. “Having this clinic opened up opened my eyes to what the community needed and it’s evolving every day.”
The clinic has recently begun working with Friend’s Johnson Pharmacy in an effort to support local businesses.
“We’ve been listening to the community and hearing what they have to say,” Collier said.
Both Collier and Taylor said community support plays a huge role in opening a clinic in a rural setting.
“It’s not just us as a clinic that needs to stay open but all of us that need to work together,” Collier said.
Although it is yet to be implemented, Taylor said her background in providing home health care will be a huge part in the services they are able to offer to Friend and surrounding areas. She hopes to start her home visits by the end of June.
Complete Rural Medicine hopes to soon offer aesthetic skin care and be open five days week, with occasional weekend hours. Currently, they are open Tuesdays-Fridays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
“It’s just been a blessing,” Collier said.
