Dorchester has big plans for their annual Fourth of July celebration.

The Fourth of July committee has been planning year-round for the event, which kicks off on July 3 with a co-ed softball tournament at Nerud Field.

“There will be a fun run, pie and ice cream social and bingo and a kiddie tractor pull,” Chelsea Smith, marketing director of the committee said.

Other activities July 4th include an evening parade and a fireworks show.

“We are known for our fireworks,” Smith said.

The show starts at 10 p.m. and Smith said it is best to get a spot in Nerud Field for the best view.

Over the course of the day, donations will be accepted and gathered to fund next year’s celebration.

Food options include a concession stand near the city park, a breakfast following the fund run and a Sons of the American Legion barbeque.

People from all over come to the event, Smith said, including Lincoln and surrounding counties.

“(Dorchester) is perfect if you want to get away from the crowds,” Smith said. “This vent really proves how a community can grow and succeed.”
