The Crete/Milford baseball team has a two-game winning streak going. The Cardinals came from behind to win both games last week, edging Falls City 5-4 April 8 and Central City/Fullerton 10-7 April 9.
Coach Jeremy Fries said the Cardinals fell behind early against Falls City because the defense didn’t make some plays and the offense let the FC pitchers off the hook.
“But you have to hand it to our guys, with the game on the line they battled and found a way to get it done,” he said. “We were down to our last strike twice in the last inning and Nate Mensik and AJ Page were able to come away with a hit that proved critical in helping us win the game.”
With two outs in the top of the seventh, Nate Mensik singled to left and took second on an error. AJ Page singled to score Mensik. Carson Stauffer singled to drive in Trenton Stauffer, who was running for Page.
In the bottom of the seventh, the lead-off hitter walked and stole second. He was thrown out trying to steal third with one out. Mensik struck out the final batter to seal the win.
Page was 3-4 in the game, and Mensik and Carson Stauffer had two hits each. Lucas Lenhoff got the win, with Mensik recording the save.
CCF had two big innings the next night, scoring five in the third and two in the sixth to tie the score at 7-7 going into the bottom of the sixth.
With two outs, Mensik singled and stole second, scoring on a single by Page. Lenhoff, running for Page, stole second and scored on a double by Carson Stauffer. Trenton Stauffer ran for Carson and scored on a single by Gage Schrunk.
“We got off to a great start and allowed them to come back and take the lead after they were able to string together some hits,” Fries said. “Nate Mensik had a nice outing and was able to keep them in check the last four innings. Our offense also stepped it up once again and got it done with the game on the line.”
Mensik, Page and Carson Stauffer had two hits each. One of Mensik’s was a home run in the fourth inning.
The Cardinals (5-4) were to host Seward April 15 and travel to Blair Thursday, April 18. On Tuesday, April 23, they’re back home to host Nebraska City.
