Staff reporter panelist at Nebraska Press Association

Congratulations to Emily Hemphill for being selected as a panelist for the Nebraska Press Association. Hemphill shared with other newsrooms the benefit of focused coverage within their communities using her series “The Childcare Desert” and the impact it brought to the coverage area. We are proud of Hemphill and her work.

Paper wins contest awards

The Seward County Independent brought home 10 awards at the Nebraska Press Association’s annual convention and Better Newspaper Contest awards banquet April 27 in Lincoln.
Along with its sister papers, the Milford Times, Crete News, Wilber Republican and Friend Sentinel, the papers earned a total of 60 honors, including two sweepstakes awards, two General Excellence awards and a Photo of the Year.

Manslaughter is charge after grand jury indictment

A grand jury has returned an indictment charging Seward County Sheriff’s Deputy Anthony J. Gann with manslaughter, a Class IIA felony, in the October 2023 death of Jorge Luis Santana Ramirez.
Lancaster County Attorney Pat Condon reported April 26 on the findings of the recent Lancaster County grand jury that convened as a result of Santana Ramirez’s death on Oct. 23, 2023.

THURSDAY - Museum opens

The Seward County Historical Society Museum in Goehner will begin its summer schedule Thursday, May 2. It is open Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1:30 – 5 p.m.

SATURDAY - Dog show comes this weekend

The Seward County Kennel Club will host the annual two-day AKC All-Breed Dog Show, Obedience and Rally Trials at the Seward County fairgrounds from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, May 4-5. FastCat trials will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the fairgrounds. The public is welcome, no admission charge.

Milford boys win conference

For the first time in school history, the Milford boys are the Southern Nebraska Conference track and field champions. The Eagles bested second-place Wilber-Clatonia by almost 60 points. Conference champions for MHS are Aiden Henson, 100- and 200-meter dashes; Avery Carter, 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs; Isaac Roth, 110- and 300-meter hurdles; and the 4x400-meter relay team. Champions for the girls are Lilly Kenning, 400 and 800; and Sarah Spahr, high jump.

Horne leads Broncos at conference

Savannah Horne swept the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the Southern Nebraska Conference meet April 27, running season-best times in both. Paul Fehlhafer won the shot put with a personal-best throw of 52-1, and Camden Winkelman topped the pole vault at 12-6.

Walters wins double gold for Malcolm

Jake Walters of Malcolm was the Trailblazer Conference champion in both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles April 27 to lead the Clippers at the meet. Halle Dolliver won the girls' 400-meter dash, and Mikiah Witzel took first in the girls' discus.

Soccer starts postseason play

The Seward boys' and girls' soccer teams will open subdistricts tonight. The SHS girls are in the B6 subdistrict at Norris and will play Beatrice at 7 p.m. The boys are in the B6 subdistrict at Schuyler and will play Scotus at 4 p.m. Subdistrict finals are tomorrow.

Hirschfeld paces Broncos

Alex Hirschfeld of Centennial shot an 81 and finished 13th in a tough field at the Crete Invitational April 26. Coach Cam Scholl said the golfers were able to finish the tournament before the storms rolled in.

Burhoop leads Jays at invite

Hayden Burhoop of Seward shot a 78 to lead the Bluejays at the Crete Invite April 26. The golfers got the meet in before the storms started, Coach Jim Placke said.
