The Seward golf team earned a place in the Class B state championships by finishing third in the District B3 tournament May 18.

Seward, which shot a 348, finished behind Columbus Scotus (337) and York (347) in the tournament played at Southern Hills near Hastings.

“This was a good day for us,” Coach Jim Placke said. “We felt very relieved to make it.”

Harrison Helmer shot a 41-39 80 to finished second overall. Alec Hanson carded a 42-44 86. Grant Biggs ended up with scores of 47 and 48 for an 87. Jared Schlueter was out in 44 and back in 51 for a 95, and Jared Hartman shot two rounds of 49 for a 98.

“Harrison had a great day for us,” Placke said. “He picked a good day to have his best day.”

Placke said the Bluejays fought through a tough course and a north wind.

Seward will now compete in the Class B championships Tuesday and Wednesday, May 26 and 27, at Riverside Golf Course in Grand Island.

Seward finished its regular season with a home dual against Milford May 13. Seward defeated the Eagles 165-171.

Hanson shot a 38 to tie for the low score. Helmer finished in 40, Biggs in 43, Hartman in 44 and Schlueter in 46.

“This was a very solid day for us,” Placke said. “It was a good way to finish the regular season.”

With very few competitions at home, he said, it was nice to play at Seward Country Club.
