The Seward girls’ basketball team broke its own three-point record in a 72-25 victory over Schuyler Jan. 15 but then struggled to score against Waverly Jan. 16 in a 39-26 loss.

“We really shot well against Schuyler,” Coach Tom Tvrdy said.

Seward made 23 of 48 attempts and was 19 of 34 from three-point range. The previous record for made three-point shots in a game was 18, which Seward had achieved twice. Anna Schulz led the way with a 5-9 performance from beyond the arc. Carley Hartman, Hannah Core and Kelsie Zadina made three each, with two coming from Rylee Opfer and Kate Mullally and one by Regan Karel.

Schulz finished with 17 points, Core scored 13 and Zadina 11. Core also had four assists and five steals.

The next day, the Jays faced a senior-led Waverly team that gives up 28 points per game.

“We couldn’t get good shots,” he said.

Hartman led the offense with nine points, and Kendra Placke added eight.

Seward (7-5) will play two more ranked teams this week. Elkhorn comes to Seward Jan. 19, and the Jays travel to Aurora Friday, Jan. 22, for a 6 p.m. game. The Elkhorn game was postponed to Thursday, Jan. 21, at 5:30 because of poor road conditions in Elkhorn.

Elkhorn has one of the best posts in the state, and Aurora has one of the best guards in the state, Tvrdy said. Both are surrounded by good supporting casts, and that will provide a challenge for the Jays.
