Eagles fall shorts against Wolverines

Coach Phil Stauffer said the Milford girls played well enough to beat Wilber-Clatonia Jan. 29 but didn’t make enough free throws in the 60-47 loss.

Wilber-Clatonia was 22-34 at the line, while Milford was 13-29.

Things started well for the Eagles, who led 15-6 early. But the Wolverines battled back, cutting the lead to 15-13 at the end of the first and going into halftime up 27-21.

“We struggled to get a rhythm offensively,” Stauffer said. “Wilber is a tough team to stop. They get up and down the floor.”

Tyra Aschoff had a good game for the Eagles, scoring a career-high 17 points to lead the offense. Ellie Hostetler grabbed 11 rebounds.

Stauffer was happy with Milford’s turnover numbers, however. MHS only committed 13 in the game and forced 17 by the Wolverines. The Eagles struggled on the boards, however, giving up 42 rebounds while grabbing 31.

The Eagles enter the Southern Nebraska Conference tournament at 3-14 and will travel to Sandy Creek Thursday, Feb. 4, for a 5:45 p.m. game.
