Field events were good to the Centennial Broncos at the Milford Invitational April 14. The Broncos won five golds in the field, and the boys’ 4x100-meter relay team sprinted to the win, as well.

In the girls’ competition, Cacey Vavra improved her personal best in the high jump by three inches, clearing the bar at 5-1 to win the event. The height put Vavra on the school’s Top 10 list, Coach Rob Johansen said.

All three pole vaulters earned medals at Milford. Hannah Tomes led the charge, winning the event with a height of 8-6. Mariah Jensen finished third at 7-0, and Mady Payne was fifth at 6-6.

Stephen Yamber and Kyle Gierhan won multiple golds in the boys’ events. The two teamed with Conner Luettel and Caden Eberspacher to win the 4x100-meter relay in 47.05 seconds.

“We don’t have a great 100-meter dash guy that can compete for top spots in the open 100, but the boys really hit their handoffs in the meet to make up the difference.  They were pretty excited about the win,” Johansen said.

Yamber also won the triple jump at 42-4.75 and the high jump at 6-0. Gierhan took top honors in the pole vault at 12-6.

“Stephen and Kyle have been really consistent in their marks this season.  Hopefully they will get some conditions in upcoming meets to set some bigger marks,” Johansen said.

Also scoring points for the Bronco girls were the 4x800-meter relay team in fourth; Tomes, fifth in the 100-meter dash; the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay teams fifth; Jensen, tie for fifth in the high jump; and Krysta Haberman, sixth in the discus.

Earning top-six finishes in the boys’ competition were Kain Songster, third in the 1,600-meter run; Tyler Griggs, third in the 3,200-meter run; the 4x400-meter relay third; Eberspacher, fourth in the pole vault; Tanner Barth, fifth in the shot put and discus; and Gierhan, sixth in the 100-meter dash.

The Broncos were scheduled to host an invitational April 21 and a quadrangular Tuesday, April 28.
