A change in approach gave Tanner Barth a break-out day in the shot put, Centennial Coach Rob Johansen said.

Barth, who switched to spinning, threw a personal best 51-6 to win the event at the Centennial Invitational April 21.

“Things are coming together for him,” Johansen said, adding that the throw was almost six feet further than his previous personal best.

The CHS senior also finished third in the discus with a throw of 129-2.

Stephen Yamber also set a personal best in the high jump, winning the event at 6-2. He topped the triple jump with a jump of 41-2 and needed only two attempts to hit that mark, Johansen said.

Kyle Gierhan cleared the bar at 12-6 to finish third in the pole vault, and the 4x100-meter relay team of Gierhan, Conner Luettel, Yamber and Caden Eberspacher was third in 46.3 seconds.

Luettel and Bryson Jirovsky ran identical times of 18.1 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles, placing fifth and sixth, respectively.

“These two boys are really starting to get the rhythm of running the hurdles and have switched to three-stepping some of the hurdles,” Johansen said.

While the girls’ team had just one top-three finisher at the meet, Johansen said the coaches saw “some improvement from quite a few athletes at the meet.”

Hannah Tomes cleared 9-0 in the pole vault, a season best mark, and finished third in the event.

Overall, the Centennial boys’ team was fifth and the girls were eighth.

“The meet has some very good quality athletes that pushed our kids to compete and get better,” Johansen said.

Up next for the Broncos were a quadrangular at home April 28 and the Southern Nebraska Conference meet Saturday, May 2.
