Celebrate Poetry. Celebrate Nebraska: Seward Memorial Library will host a poetry contest celebrating Seward’s 150th birthday as well as Seward County’s and Nebraska’s sesquicentennial. Library patrons of all ages are invited to write original poems. Poems must be 150 words (not including the title) and be related to our community or state. The poetry can be in any form and preferably submitted online at sewardlibrary.org. The entry deadline is Friday, April 21, at noon.

Fridays for You: The Fridays For You program Friday, April 21, will be “Therapy Services: Understanding types of therapy, when they are needed and how they improve quality of life” with Pete Christensen, director of therapy services. The program will be in the lower level Vahle Conference Room at the Seward Family Medical Center.

Night at the Museum: The Nebraska National Guard Museum will host its annual Night at the Museum Friday, April 21, from 5-9 p.m. Major Gen. Daryl Bohac, adjutant general, will speak at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $20. RSVP todnore1@windstream.net or (402) 499-3940. Reservations are due by Friday, April 14.

Weekend plans?

Spring clean-up: Seward County sites will host the annual spring clean-up days and household hazardous waste disposal Saturday, April 22. In Seward, items may be dropped off at the Seward Wastewater Treatment Plant parking lot, 1040 South Columbia Ave., from 8-11 a.m. Items may be dropped off in Milford from 9-11 a.m. at a site to be announced.

Children's theatre: The York College Traveling Children’s Theatre is coming to Seward Memorial Library on Saturday, April 22. A group of students will perform “Once Upon a Wolf” at 1 p.m. This is a fast and furious collection of fractured fairy tales with a unique twist when the Big Bad Wolf decides he does not want to be big or bad anymore. The narrator, Granny, attempts to tell many classic fairy tales, as the wolf starts on his mission to change his image. Everyone is welcome to attend this one-hour show, but children who have not yet attended school must be accompanied by an adult.

Relay for Life: The Seward County Relay for Life will be Saturday, April 22, from 4-10 p.m. at the Ag Pavilion in Seward. The Luminary Ceremony will start at 9 p.m. Luminaries are available for $10. Legion breakfast: The Pleasant Dale American Legion will host breakfast Sunday, April 23, from 8 a.m. to noon. The menu includes pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, French toast, biscuits and gravy, coffee and juice. A fee will be charged.

Celebrate Earth Day: Retired state Sen. Ken Haar of Malcolm will be a special guest at the St. Andrew’s Earth Day Festival on Sunday, April 23, from 1 to 4 p.m. He will speak at 2 p.m. on “The Future Ain’t What It Used To Be! – Yogi Berra and Climate Change.” The festival also will feature a plant sale, books, a fun activity for kids, “green” displays, demonstrations and door prizes. Come celebrate Earth Day at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Sixth and Hillcrest.

Author talk: Author Jason Bougger of Omaha will talk about the business of writing fiction in Seward on Sunday, April 23, at 2 p.m. at the Red Path Gallery & Tasting Room, 514 Seward Street, Seward. The gallery will host a reception starting at 1:30 p.m. Bougger, author of “Holy Fudgesicles,” will give a brief intro to the business of writing fiction and talk about some of the basics of what it takes to get your writing career started, from publishing short stories, to building your author platform.

Poetry reading: Seward Memorial Library invites local poets to a special afternoon program of Poetry Reading on Sunday, April 23, at 2 p.m. Participants in the Nebraska poetry writing contest will have an opportunity to read their work. Winners of the poetry writing contest will be announced during the gathering.

Kite flying contest: The Seward Rotary Club will host the annual J. Don Miller Memorial Rotary Kite Flying Contest at Plum Creek Park on Sunday, April 23, at 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and held at the Plum Creek soccer fields. Special awards will be presented in a variety of categories. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held the following Sunday. Groups to perform: The Male Chorus and Women’s Chorale from Concordia University will perform in a joint concert Sunday, April 23, at 4 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward. The Male Chorus, conducted by Dr. Kurt von Kampen, and the Women’s Chorale, conducted by Dr. Jeffrey Blersch, are choirs open to all Concordia students and perform repertoire chosen from the full spectrum of choral music from early historical periods to the present.
