Maurine (Harter) Schark, 87, of Wilber formerly of York, passed away on June 6, 2015, at BryanLGH West in Lincoln. She was born on Sept. 8, 1927, in Beaver Crossing to Francis and Rose (Walterscheid) Harter and raised on the family farm.

After graduating from Beaver Crossing High School in 1945, she taught in a one-room school house for a brief period. She then moved to Lincoln and worked as an operator for the Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph Company. After she married and before moving to York, Maurine traveled with her husband as he worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. She spent her time focusing on family and raising six children before going to work for the York County Assessor’s Office as a clerk. She retired from York County in 1992 after 22 years of service.

On Nov. 8, 1950, Maurine married Donald Schark, and they celebrated 64 years of marriage together. In their younger years they enjoyed spending time in area ballrooms dancing to the sounds of big bands. In later years, time was spent traveling together across the county and abroad, including trips with the York Fun Club, and to visit grandchildren and attend their activities.

Maurine lived in York for 53 years and was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, attending Mass daily while her health permitted. Over the years, Maurine was actively involved with the St. Joseph Altar Society and Legion of Mary, and she spent many hours visiting the sick and elderly at the Hearthstone Manor. She was an avid gardener and had a knack for healing the ailing plants of friends and family. Maurine was a loving, caring mother and grandmother, always sending cookies and special notes to her loved ones across the country. She was an inspiration to others through her resolve and unwavering faith.

Maurine was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Maurice, Mahlon, Marvin and Robert; brother-in-law, Ralph O’Connor; and son-in-law, Scott Zlab.

She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Don Schark; and five daughters and one son, Barb (Chris) Neville of White Hall, Maryland, Mary (Dave) Frankforter of Yankton, South Dakota, Kathy (Dave) Mesaros of Bellbrook, Ohio, Deb (Pete) Hohnstein of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Donna (Russ) Zlab-Kovar of Wilber and Doug Schark of Kansas City, Missouri; four sisters, Jean O’Connor of Grafton, Lois (Ron) Korinek of Lincoln, Margaret (Dick) Trojan of Beaver Crossing and Jerry (Dick) Pariset of Beaver Crossing; brother, Don (Carol) Harter of Omaha; 14 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
