Deep roots, high hopes

Thousands of people once again arrived in Seward early on July 4 to celebrate Independence Day. Hot temperatures and high humidity didn’t keep the crowds from flooding downtown Seward for its annual celebration.

This year’s celebration highlighted the community’s 150th anniversary of the city, county and state. Exhibits at the Nebraska National Guard Museum and various sites around the community celebrated this year’s theme “Deep Roots, High Hopes.”

“I feel that our Seward Fourth of July Celebration Committee and the local Seward Sesquicentennial Committee for Seward’s 150th birthday have worked especially hard to make this a very special day,” Clark Kolterman, Seward Fourth of July Committee chairman, said. “We have never had so many offerings and feature more state level sesquicentennial events than any other community, all of July 4.”

Kolterman, who was given this year’s Nebraska’s Friend Award, was proud of the spirit of the day.

“The spirit of Seward is at an all-time high, and we feel that the working together to create the celebration is as important as the event itself for the community,” Kolterman said. “Having the new Nebraska National Guard Museum has assisted in making our celebration even more expansive and almost gives us Red, White and Blue theme for us year round.”
