City looks into parking hazards

Seward City Council members discussed limiting parking on streets from Columbia Avenue to Eastridge Drive north of Hillcrest Drive.

Amy Lobmeyer, a resident in the area, spoke at the council’s May 5 meeting.

Lobmeyer said when Concordia University has an event, people park on both sides of the included streets, which creates blind intersections.

“Both my husband and I have had near-collisions, and we’ve seen other people have near-collisions,” Lobmeyer said.

Lobmeyer asked the council to restrict parking on one side of each street to clear the intersections.

John Hughes, the public facilities/capital improvements and GIS director, said restricting parking 100 feet back from the intersections would also help.

“What [Lobmeyer] brings up is a valid point,” Hughes said.

The council directed Hughes to look into the situation, to make recommendations at a later meeting and to notify nearby residents of the parking changes.

Also during the meeting, Adam Herink from Bluestem Energy gave a presentation explaining renewable energy solutions that could be possible in Seward.

Herink said there is a two-megawatt limit on the amount of renewable energy that can be used in a city. This helps to supplement energy in the town, instead of taking business away from current power providers.

Herink mostly spoke about adding a windmill generator because wind energy is more stable at the moment.

Hughes said a windmill could potentially be placed on South 2nd Street, across from Tenneco.

However, there is no agreement between the city and Bluestem yet. Hughes said it is something the city is looking into.
