Seward Country Club to offer city ownership

Seward has had a golf course for nearly 100 years, but that may not be the case after this year.

Seward Country Club, Inc., which has been in financial trouble for a number of years, has decided to shut its doors after Dec. 31, 2015. The members voted omn on Sept. 27 to authorize the current board of directors to take action to dissolve and/or liquidate the Seward Country Club, Inc. at the end of the year.

The members also authorized the board to offer the City of Seward ownership of the golf course with the city taking over the current debt of about $350,000.

According to the Seward Country Club board, city ownership is the best option at this time.

As of press time, a proposal had not been submitted to the city for an official buyout of the club. According to the option to sell, the city would acquire the clubhouse, about two acres of land and all other items related to and owned by Seward Country Club.

Seward Country Club was formed in 1963 and its current location near Highway 15 on the north side of Seward was selected for a new course. In May of 1965, the course was opened.

Seward had two course locations prior to that. The first course location is where Centennial Park is and the second was northeast of Seward. Seward city officials have said they will review the proposal and present it to the council if all the details are worked out and the purchase is the right thing for the city to do.

Nate’s On The Nine, the restaurant at the course, will remain open.
