Summer reading program provides variety of activities

The summer reading program, "On Your Mark-Get Set-Read" at the Dvoracek Memorial Library in Wilber started with everyone learning about good nutrition and making fruit kabobs and strawberry smoothies.

Gary Wooten from the Wilber Legion shared how to care for and fold the American Flag. Thanks goes out to the American Legion and Auxiliary for a new flag and the new books about the flag.

Police Chief Stephen Sunday shared his two favorite words, "Think Safety" and told how to play safely this summer.

A week of getting in shape included a "book sandwich" relay and parachute activities.

The Wilber Lions Club provided a picnic supper to help celebrate the many minutes everyone read through the month of June— 28,075 minutes. Everyone received a "Super Reader" medal, back pack, book and certificate of completion. The Top Reader Award (sponsored by Farmers and Merchants Bank) went to Phillip, Kelsey and Monica Zoubek who read 3,000 minutes each in June. Lacey Novotny was the Top Reader runner-up reading a total of 1,200 minutes.

In June, Katie Zoubek, junior high school girls and parents worked every week to make the Summer Reading program a great success. Now the library is gearing up for the Olympics next month. Watch for some fun projects to do in August. Story Time will also start up again in September with a Dinosaur Dig.

The Library Park project is still on track with new patio furniture delivered the past few week, thanks to a grant from Norris Public Power. The library has also received donations from Boyd and Shirley Adkinson for the park in memory of Stanley and Arline Chab, Ed and Emily Cizek and Victor and Nita Chab.

The Saline County Tourism Committee approved funds for the library to use for the Story Walk project in the park and production of the stands will be started shortly.

Robert J. Prokop shared a donation to purchase some beanbag chairs for the children's department. Jean Cerveny has volunteered to help update the book inventory this summer along with the summer interns Bridget Tranmer and Quinton Corwin, and some very nice book donations have been received the past month.

During Czech Days, Mila Saskova-Pierce will give a mini lesson in Czech on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. in the Stastny Room. Suzi Parron, author of "Following the Barn Quilt Trail" and "Barn Quilts and the American Quilt Trail Movement" will be at the library on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m. Wilber's flower pot barn quilts are featured in her latest book.
