Tvrdy medals twice
Stephanie Croston
Titus Tvrdy won two medals and shot the low score in a triangular to lead the Seward High golf team last week. The week opened with a very windy triangular at the Seward Country Club. Tvrdy had the low score of 39, and the Bluejays finished with a 174 to win. Wahoo Neumann shot a 183 and David City finished with 199. For Seward, Jared Hans shot a 42, Bryan Rodenbaugh a 45 and Tyler Lichty and Court Croghan both 48s. "Titus had a tremendous round," Coach Jim Placke, citing wind gusts up to 45 mph that plagued the golfers. "It was nice for our confidence to get a win." April 16, the Jays went to Fairbury where they were fourth of nine teams and earned three individual medals. Seward shot a team total of 344; Beatrice won the invitational with a 331. Tvrdy shot rounds of 45 and 35 for an 80 and seventh place. Rodenbaugh was 11th with a 43-41 84, and Croghan was out in 44 and back in 42 for an 86 and 12th place. Hans shot a 55-43 98, and Lichty finished with a 45-49 94. "This was our best invite of the year," Placke said. "The weather was favorable, and we were consistent across the board." He said the Jays almost achieved their team goal, which was one score under 80 and three under 86. The Jays were fifth of six team at Aurora April 19 with a score of 357. Aurora won the invite with a 327. Tvrdy was the team's only medalist with rounds of 43 and 41 for an 84 and eighth place. Croghan finished with a 45-44 89, and Hans shot a 43-46 89. Rodenbaugh carded rounds of 46 and 49 for a 95, and Josh Luff was out in 53 and back in 43 for a 96. Despite beautiful weather that day, Placke said scores were higher than he expected across the board. The Jays continue to work on consistent play, he said. With three sophomores and one freshman filling four of the five varsity spots Saturday, consistency is something that will come in time, he said. "I told the kids it's a process," he said. "We have to learn from our mistakes." Upcoming action Seward's only competition this week is Friday, April 25, at the Crete Invitational. Golfers tee off at 9 a.m. Crete's course is short and tight "with crazy greens," Placke said.
