Jays get second win

Stephanie Croston

The Seward baseball team lost a weather-delayed game to Columbus March 28 and split a doubleheader with Archbishop Bergan March 29, moving its record to 2-5 for the season.
It took extra innings, but the Jays downed Bergan 3-2 in the second game of the twin bill. Coach Roy Wright said it was an especially satisfying win for him because Bergan is his alma mater.
Both teams were quiet until the eighth inning, when Bergan scored two to take a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the frame, with two outs, John Samuelson tripled to start the Bluejay rally. Trevor Oliver drew a walk, and Tyler Klotz singled to drive Samuelson home. Tanner Smith then doubled off the fence, driving home two runs for the 3-2 victory.
"You got the sense by their attitude that they weren't going to let this one slip away," Wright said.
Kyle Einspahr went the distance, allowing six hits and no earned runs in eight innings.
The Jays lost game one 3-1. Seward held a 1-0 lead after the fourth inning, but Bergan scored two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to pull out the win.
Justin Grieser pitched a complete game, striking out seven.
"There was just no support," Wright said.
Grieser also doubled for the Jays, Seward's only extra-base hit of the game.
SHS hosted Columbus in a weather-delayed game March 28 and lost 15-4. Wright said Columbus was a better team.
"We got beat up in the run totals, but we played hard," he said.
Klotz, Jakob Howe and Chase Wurdeman each pitched for the Jays. Klotz also notched a double on the offensive end.
    Upcoming action
Seward enters a stretch of seven games in six days. Five of those games are on the road.
The Jays were to play single games at Blair April 1 and at Crete Thursday, April 3. A doubleheader is scheduled at South Sioux City beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, April 4, and another doubleheader is scheduled at home Saturday, April 5, against Omaha South beginning at 11 a.m.
"There are a lot of winnable games," Wright said.
March 31's game at Nebraska City was postponed because of weather.
