County schools clash on hardwood

    This past week saw the Centennial Bronco girls' basketball team go head-to-head with York, Seward and Tri County High Schools.
    York 41, Centennial 39
     On Dec. 4, the Broncos hosted York, falling in double overtime 41-39.
     "We showed good energy and got out to a nice lead in the first quarter," Coach Mark Ortmeier said. "We just didn't continue the momentum. York also made some shots in the second quarter."
     Beth Erks finished with a double-double for the Broncos, with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
     Mackenzie Sullivan finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, six steals and three assists for Centennial.
     "We had our opportunities to win the game several times, but didn't convert. We shot 22 percent for the game," Ortmeier said.
    Seward 61, Centennial 40
     On Dec. 6, the Broncos lost to Seward 60-41 at.
     "Seward is a very good basketball team," Ortmeier said. "They have all the parts to compete for the Class B crown. They really got off to a good start against us looking inside to Alyssa Kamphaus. She is a real force."
     Sullivan led the way for the Broncos, finishing with 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
     Erks added 14 points and six rebounds for Centennial.
     "I was proud of how we fought back all night long and at one point cutting the lead to 12 in the third quarter," Ortmeier said.
    Tri County 48, Centennial 35
     On Dec. 8, the Broncos fell to Tri County 48-35.
     Centennial played without starter Sullivan, who was out with a knee injury.
     "Her injury made other people step up and play more minutes," Ortmeier said.
     Erks led Centennial scorers, finishing with 20 points and six rebounds.
     "Beth worked real hard getting shots for us," Ortmeier said. "She has a knack for drawing fouls and getting to the foul line."
     Emily Koski added eight points for the Broncos.
     "She showed us a little on the offensive end in the post," Ortmeier said. "She could be a very important part of our offense."
     Sydney Focht and Haylie Zima both finished with two steals and Danielle Mooney had four assists.
    Upcoming action
     On Friday, Dec. 14, the Broncos, now 1-3, will host Southern. Game time is set for 6:15 p.m. On Saturday, Dec. 15, the Broncos will travel to Milford. Tipoff time is set at 6:15 p.m.
     On Tuesday, Dec. 18, Centennial will host Fairbury. Game time is set for 6:15 p.m.
