Tragedy hits local family

Two of the victims killed at the New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colo., Dec. 9 have ties to Seward.
Stephanie Works, 18, and Rachael Works, 16, are the grandchildren of Russell and Thelma Schaepe, Seward.
David Works, the girls' father, suffered gunshot wounds to the abdomen and groin area. He was listed in fair condition at Penrose Hospital, according to KKTV.com. All three were in their car when they were shot. Other family members include the girls' mother, Marie, Stephanie's twin sister Laurie and younger sister, Emily.
Marie graduated from Norris High School in 1979 and attended Concordia College, now University, in Seward.
Thelma Schaepe said that funeral services were pending. Cards may be sent to the family at 1799 South Dayton, Building 5, Apartment 511, Denver, CO 80247. The shooter has been identified as 24-year-old Matthew Murray of Arapahoe County.
He was killed by a security guard at the church within 50 feet of the entrance. The guard was a parishioner with previous law enforcement experience, the Rev. Brady Boyd, senior pastor at New Life, told KKTV.
CNN.com reported that Murray fired more than 40 rounds at the church with a high-powered assault rifle. The shooting happened around 1 p.m. Dec. 9.
Approximately 7,000 people were on the church campus at the time of the shooting. The church was apparently Murray's second destination.
According to reports, he used a handgun to kill two people and wound two others at the Youth With a Mission office in Arvada, Colo., earlier that morning. New Life Church has a satellite office for the mission.
