Tyler Weatherholt, a 2007 Seward High School graduate, was invited last spring, just after basketball season ended, to play in the Nebraska Coaches Association (NCA) 37th Annual Boys' Basketball All-Star Game July 30.
Weatherholt, a 6'2" guard, said he has already played in three all-star games this year, but is excited to play at the NCA All-Star Game.
"For a typical basketball game, I was always calm because they were within my comfort zone," Weatherholt said. "The all-star games are different and it will take some time to get used to the players. An all-star game is not a team-game; it's more of an individual showcase."
The men's all-star players will meet in Lincoln Saturday, July 28, for a camp and practices prior to the all-star game.
The game will be held at Lincoln North Star High School, Lincoln, at 8 p.m. Monday, July 30, and will be broadcast live on ETV, channel 60 in Seward. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children. The doors open at 5 p.m. for the 26th Annual NCA Girls' Basketball All-Star Game and tickets purchased for the girls' game count toward entrance to the boys' game.
Weatherholt will play for the blue team at the all-star game. Head coach of the blue will be Rocky Ruhl, Wayne, and assistant coach will be Dan Moore, North Platte. The red team will be coached by Kyle Hoehner, Kearney, and Mike Herzberg, Aurora.
Weatherholt started playing basketball when he was young and went to his first basketball camp in second grade.
"I have been basically playing basketball since I could walk," Weatherholt said.
He said that his dad, Rick Weatherholt, guidance counselor and assistant basketball coach at SHS, has been helping him with his basketball skills since the beginning.
"My dad always helped me and I learned a lot from him," Weatherholt said. "Then, I was hooked. It has been a passion of mine since I was a kid; I love basketball."
He said as he grew in skill, age and height, he became more interested in the competitive side of the sport.
"I started to play a lot more and the competitive nature came in," he said. "I love all sports, but basketball has always been my favorite and I love to win."
