As of press time, the Seward Seniors are holding strong in Class B Area 4 American Legion districts, defeating Lincoln Lutheran on July 20 and York on July 22. Seward, the number two seed in the tournament, shut down Lincoln Lutheran 13-0 in five innings, bringing the game to an early end. Daniel Lowther scored the first run for the Seniors in the first inning. The Seniors took off in the top of the second, however, as their first two batters were walked. Russell Evavold, courtesy runner for pitcher Justin Grieser, stole his way around the bases, while several base hits gave Seward a six run lead. Lincoln Lutheran held them off until the fifth inning, where seven more runs put Seward ahead by 13. Grieser gave up one hit to Lincoln Lutheran in the bottom of the first, but otherwise Lincoln's bats didn't knock anything Seward didn't catch. On Sunday the Seniors took on number three seed York. Seward was trailing early. Pitcher Alex Lowther gave up four runs to York in the second inning, and they couldn't crack York's offense until the fourth, where they scored all six of their runs. Lowther shut down the York bats for the rest of the game. Seward won 6-5. "He actually pitches better later in the game," said coach Roy Wright. Wright said Seward has trailed York in the past always come back and win. "The first time we played York we were behind by eight and we still won," he said. "We've beat them all five teams we've played them." As of press time, Seward is set to take on number one seed David City on July 24 in the tournament semi-finals. "We're just excited being in the winner bracket," Wright said. "[David City] beat us a couple times this year. "It will be nice to be at our home field, and we'll have our best pitchers throwing. Hopefully we'll come out on top."
